Alcoholism causes a huge negative impact in the society. It is one of the top causes of death, violence and accidents across the world which is why the world of medicine gives this issue the utmost priority for medical interventions. Contrary to many beliefs that an alcoholic can do fine without a medical professional, alcoholism is in fact, another form of substance abuse. Moreover, the alcoholic is not the only one suffering if prompt treatment is not available. Everyone involved are likely to suffer as well. This is the reason why proper counseling would involve rehabilitating the alcoholic's family members and significant others as well.
The medical approach of alcohol treatment would require various drugs to help reduce the manifestations of alcohol withdrawal especially at its most critical period where physiological manifestations are likely to occur. These would include anti-convulsants, relaxants, sedatives and anti psychotics. Drugs such as benzodiazepines are only good for short term use since these drugs can cause another form of addiction. This drug, however could not cure the underlying addiction for alcohol since these medications are only given to counteract anxiety, restlessness and seizures.
Disulfuram or antabuse is another form of drug which can help treat alcoholism. This medication has the capacity to alter the body's ability to eliminate acetaldehyde which triggers a hangover. This allows the body to experience all the discomforts when a drinker decides to drink alcohol while taking in antabuse. This will then deter the drinker from taking I alcohol. This medication is quite successful and it could help an alcoholic abstain from alcohol to over 50 percent. However, unexpected intake of alcohol in any form including the use of mouthwashes, colognes and cosmetics could lead to the same effects and could even lead to life threatening conditions such as seizures.
Besides medical prescription drugs there are other forms of alcoholism treatment such as detoxification. Detox, as commonly known, is usually paired with a drug that substitutes the alcoholic's dependence on drinking. Benzodiazepine is a common drug subscribed with detoxification.
Rehabilitation would also require the need for psychotherapy. This is done through mutual help which is rendered by many alcoholic support groups and rehabilitation centers. Alanon or Alcoholics Anonymous and other group therapy groups take the necessary steps to rehabilitate alcoholics through non professional counseling and discussions that will allow alcoholics to be provided with emotional assistance and support. For treatment to work, both medical and psychiatric interventions must be taken and must be executed properly.
